Your Questions, Answered
Everything you need to know about IDZ, MetaCortex, and privacy.
General Questions
What is IDZ?
IDZ is an endtoend encrypted workspace for your files and messaging (ZCloud + ZChat). It also includes MetaCortex, a private assistant that helps you find and work across your encrypted files and chats: summarise, compare, redact, extract, and share, without compromising privacy.
What services does IDZ offer?
IDZ offers endtoend encrypted cloud storage, encrypted messaging, and secure sharing in one app. With MetaCortex, you can search and act on your private content (e.g., summarise, compare, redact, extract) and get a signed receipt for each result.
Why choose IDZ over other platforms?
Unlike many services, IDZ is zeroknowledge, adfree, and has no tracking. We can’t read your files or chats because keys stay with you. With MetaCortex, AI runs ondevice by default and every result comes with a signed receipt for auditability.
Is IDZ free?
Yes. The free plan includes essential storage, chat, sharing, and a limited MetaCortex experience. Paid plans add more storage, advanced sharing controls, and higher MetaCortex allowances/features. See the Pricing page for the latest limits.
Privacy and Security
Has IDZ been independently audited for security?
Yes. In September 2025, we engaged Cure53, an independent security consultancy based in Berlin, to perform a 21‑day white‑box assessment of IDZ. The scope covered our encryption libraries, mobile and web apps, backend APIs, and key‑management systems. The Cure53 report confirms a strong cryptographic foundation, identifies 20 findings, and provides recommendations which we have used to further improve IDZ’s security. Read the Cure53 management summary (PDF on cure53.de) here. MetaCortex builds on the same zero-knowledge architecture, and we continuously extend security testing as new MetaCortex capabilities ship.
What is zero-knowledge encryption, and why does it matter?
Zero-knowledge encryption ensures only you can access your data. Because IDZ doesn’t hold your encryption keys, we have no way to view or decrypt your files and messages.
How does IDZ differ from other providers regarding privacy?
Many providers collect and analyze your data to serve ads or improve their algorithms. IDZ does not collect metadata, IP addresses, or cookies. Your privacy is our priority.
Why do other platforms store passwords or encryption keys?
Most platforms store passwords or keys to make account recovery easier, but this also allows them to access your data for advertising purposes. IDZ avoids this to ensure your data remains private and secure.
Does IDZ track my activity?
No. IDZ has a strict no-tracking policy and doesn’t monetise your activity. In Private Mode, MetaCortex works locally on your device; if you use Boost, you explicitly approve a sanitized payload and the receipt records that Boost was used.
Does IDZ show ads?
Never. IDZ is ad-free, so we don’t monetise your data or interrupt your experience with adverts.
Can IDZ access my files or chats?
No. Your data is encrypted on your device and only you have the keys, so IDZ can’t read your files or messages. MetaCortex runs on-device by default; if you enable Boost, you’ll preview and approve what gets sent and the receipt will record it.
What is metadata, and why doesn’t IDZ collect it?
Metadata includes details like file names, sizes, or timestamps, which can reveal a lot about your activity. To protect your privacy, IDZ avoids collecting any metadata, ensuring that your usage remains completely confidential.
How does IDZ protect against data breaches?
All data is encrypted before leaving your device, so even if servers were compromised, your files and chats remain unreadable without your keys. MetaCortex Private Mode keeps sensitive processing on-device, and receipts make activity auditable.
Where does IDZ store users’ data?
Your encrypted data is stored on servers located in Ireland. MetaCortex Private Mode runs on your device; if you enable Boost, only a sanitized payload you approve may be sent out, and the receipt will show when this happens.
Authentication and Account Management
Do I need an email or phone number to use IDZ?
No. IDZ doesn’t require your email, phone number, or name. Simply generate your unique Z.ID to log in securely and anonymously, this same account is used for ZCloud, ZChat, and MetaCortex.
What if I lose my Master Key?
Your Master Key is essential to access your account. If you lose it, IDZ cannot recover your data, chats, or MetaCortex history. Only you have the keys.
Do you offer support or help with key management?
No. IDZ is self-managed, meaning we do not provide key recovery via email, text, or any other method. This keeps your files, chats, and MetaCortex activity fully under your control and away from third parties.
What happens if my account is hacked?
Because IDZ doesn’t store your passwords or keys, a hacker would need your Master Key to break in. Without it, your data remains inaccessible.
MetaCortex
What is MetaCortex?
MetaCortex is a private assistant built into IDZ that helps you search and work across your files and chats: summarise, compare, redact, extract, and share, without compromising privacy.
Does MetaCortex run on my device?
Yes. MetaCortex runs on-device by default “Private Mode”, so your sensitive content can stay within your trust boundary.
Can IDZ read my files or chats when I use MetaCortex?
No. IDZ is zero-knowledge: your files and chats are end-to-end encrypted and keys stay with you, so IDZ can’t read your content.
What is Private Mode?
Private Mode means the AI runs locally and works on your decrypted content on your device. Nothing is sent to external model providers in this mode.
What is Boost Mode?
Boost Mode is optional help for harder requests. If enabled, MetaCortex can use sanitized web/server assistance to improve results.
What data is shared in Boost Mode?
Only a sanitized, minimal version of the request is shared, and you preview exactly what will be sent before you approve it. The receipt records that Boost was used.
Can I disable Boost Mode?
Yes. You can set Boost to Never or Ask every time. Enterprise admins can also enforce Boost policies company-wide.
What are “signed receipts”?
A signed receipt is a tamper-evident record of each MetaCortex result, showing the mode used, sources referenced, actions performed, and the policies applied.
Can I export receipts?
Yes (on eligible plans). Receipts can be exported as PDF or JSON for audit, sharing, or compliance workflows.
What does “Memory” mean in MetaCortex?
Memory lets MetaCortex remember your preferences (e.g., writing style, recurring tasks) to personalize responses. You can set it to Never, time-limited, or Always, and you can clear it any time.
What counts as a “run” (and a Boost run)?
A run is one MetaCortex request that produces a result. A Boost run only counts if sanitized data is actually sent out after your approval. Internal retries don’t count as extra runs.
Can MetaCortex cite where it found an answer?
Yes. MetaCortex can cite exact sources (e.g., file sections and chat messages) so you can verify answers quickly.
Enterprise: can we keep AI processing inside our environment?
Yes (Enterprise). You can route Boost to a customer-hosted endpoint (on-prem/VPC) and apply company-wide policies.
Which devices are supported for Private Mode?
MetaCortex Private Mode works on many modern phones and computers. Performance depends on your device, and IDZ automatically selects the best on-device model for you. On older devices, some heavier tasks may recommend using Boost.
Does Boost share my content with AI providers?
Only if you enable Boost and approve it. Boost sends a sanitized preview (the minimum needed) to complete the request. What was sent, and where it went, is recorded in the receipt.
Which file formats can MetaCortex index?
MetaCortex can index supported files on-device so they can be searched and used inside IDZ. All indexes are stored with end-to-end encryption alongside your encrypted ZCloud and ZChat data. At launch, IDZ supports content indexing for PDFs with selectable text, modern Office files such as .docx, .xlsx and .pptx, OpenDocument files, text files, spreadsheets, structured files, and common plain-text/code files. Images, videos, design files and other media can still be stored in ZCloud, and some may be previewed, but their contents are not indexed unless extractable text is available. Scanned PDFs and images require OCR support. IDZ does not currently support content indexing for legacy pre-2007 Office formats such as .doc, .xls and .ppt. To use those files with MetaCortex, please convert them to .docx, .xlsx, .pptx or PDF.

Yes. Your files are encrypted on your device before being uploaded, and they remain encrypted on our servers at all times.
Which devices support Private mode, and which model will run on my device?
MetaCortex automatically selects the best local model your device can support. At launch: Devices with at least 6 GB RAM use Qwen 3.5 2B Devices with at least 12 GB RAM use Qwen 3.5 4B
Which model powers Boost mode?
At launch, Boost runs on AWS Bedrock using Anthropic Claude Sonnet 4.6. Only the sanitised data approved for that request is sent for Boost processing.
Where is my data sent when I use web-assisted queries?
For web-assisted queries, only the sanitised data approved for that request is sent. The request flows from your device to the IDZ API, then through AWS Lambda. Web retrieval uses DuckDuckGo, and model processing uses AWS Bedrock with Nova Pro.
ZChat and Sharing
What is ZChat?
ZChat is IDZ’s fully encrypted messaging service. It lets you chat privately, share files securely, and (optionally) use MetaCortex inside the app, without compromising end-to-end encryption.
Can I share files with people who don’t use IDZ?
Yes. You can create a secure public link for anyone, even those without an IDZ account, to access, or share privately with other IDZ users to maintain complete end-to-end encryption.
How does file sharing work in IDZ?
Upload files to your encrypted storage and share them in private chats or via secure links. You can also share MetaCortex outputs (like summaries or redacted versions) using the same sharing controls, with receipts available when needed.
Does IDZ allow large file sharing?
Absolutely. You can send large files and folders through encrypted conversations, so collaboration stays both convenient and secure.
